The CYL Mud Dogs picked up their third victory in a row on Tuesday afternoon with an exciting 5-4 victory over Vincennes in the Clay Youth League Pop Can Tournament at Forest Park.
Scotty Wheeler's slow ground ball was booted by Vincennes' first baseman allowing Roy Brown to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Brown opened the scoring in the game for the Mud Dogs with a first inning homerun, but Vincennes rallied for a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The visitors then loaded the bases but JT Jeffries came through with a diving catch to save any additional runs.
In the fourth inning, Brown knotted the score at 2-all with his second homerun of the contest.
Vincennes again responded, this time with a single run in the top of the sixth inning, but the resilient Mud Dogs weren't through.
Jeffries led off the bottom half of the frame with a single followed by a fielder's choice by Brown. Tyler Bridgewater came through with his third hit of the game to move Brown with two outs.
Brown would then score the tying run on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings.
Starting pitcher Clay DeWeese struckout 12 Vincennes' batters before being replaced by Wheeler who struckout a pair of batters in the seventh.
Vincennes would go out on top in the top of the eighth forcing the Mud Dogs to again rally.
With Vincennes' starting pitcher back in the game, the first two Mud Dogs reached base via walk before Tyler Bridgewater ripped a ball off the fence to score the tying run setting up Wheeler's winning grounder.
The Mud Dogs reached Tuesday's contest with an 11-0 win over Joe's Pizza (Sullivan) on Monday.
Logan Kile and Jeffries combined for the three-hit shutout victory.
Curtis Grove, Wheeler and Brown each had a pair of hits in the game. Jeffries, Braden Freeman and Clayton Harlan each had a hit and Bridgewater ended the game with a homerun.
On Sunday, the Mud Dogs picked up a 5-0 victory over Dixie Bee as DeWeese struckout 13 batters.
Brown had a three-run homerun and Kile Bridgewater and Taylor Hanson each had hits.
With the victories, the Mud Dogs were scheduled to face Terre Haute North Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the semifinal round.
