SWITZ CITY -- The Northview tennis squad dropped to 0-3 this season with a loss to White River Valley on Monday night, but got some strong efforts from members of their team.
Alex Smith was the line winner for the Knights, taking a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Zack Sykes at number three singles. "Alex (Smith) played another good game for us tonight," commented Coach Brad Pierce. "He did a good job of keeping his opponent off balance and had very few unforced errors."
At No. 1 singles, senior Shawn Hughes was defeated by Mike Powell in straight sets, though Powell did need a tie break in the first set, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Jacob Talbot lost at No. 2 singles for Northview, 1-6, 3-6 to Brandt Zimmerly of the Wolverines.
The Knights did get a doubles victory from the duo of Shane Cooper and Ryne Barr who won the first set before falling behind 3-5 in the second set.
With the light rapidly fading, the match was suspended for about 10 minutes as the court's lights were extinguished when the timer expired. However, after the break, Cooper and Barr came out firing against their opponents, quickly winning the next two points to take a 6-5 lead.
The White River Valley duo however, rebounded to push the match to a tie break in the second set after Cooper and Barr had won the first set, 6-4.
In the tie break, Northview rushed out to a 5-3 lead in the race o seven, but allowed WRV to narrow the gap to 5-4 before picking up the 7-5 tiebreak win and a 6-4, 7-6 match victory.
The No. 1 doubles group of Matt Stuckey and Clint Grey were defeated earlier in a three set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5).
In junior varsity action, Ryan Brown and Garrett Turpin won their doubles match 6-1, 6-1 while Brodee Miller lost in singles action, 6-8.
