The seventh grade North Clay football squad opened up their season with a 30-6 victory over the visiting South Vermillion Wildcats on Thursday night.
The teams faced off in a defensive struggle in the first half with the Knights getting on the board first as Patrick Duncan burst through with a touchdown run. North Clay tallied the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 advantage into the halftime break.
In the second half, South Vermillion responded with a successful scoring drive culminating in a 30-yard sweep for a touchdown. The Wildcats were unable to pick up the conversion as North Clay remained on top 8-6.
From that point, the Knights dominated play, taking a 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, North Clay got scores from quarterback Justin White and halfback Brad Powell with two-point conversions on each score.
Tight end Scotty Wheeler and wide receiver Patrick Duncan each had receptions from White while the offensive line of Justin Swinefurth, Jordan Allen, Mike Grigsby, Jacob Parkins and Cody Randall each provided excellent blocking up front.
On defense, Wheeler, Duncan, White and Grigsby along with Brock Potter each had standout games.
The next action for North Clay will be at Owen Valley on September 1.
