With all three Northview volleyball teams in action on Saturday, the Knights came away with an impressive showing against area teams.
The varsity squad picked up a pair of important wins over Western Indiana Conference opponents, Sullivan and Brown County. Even more key is that the Knights sent the Golden Arrows to not only their first WIC loss of the year, but their first loss overall as well in a four set battle.
Northview opened play on Saturday with a 25-16, 16-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Sullivan before moving on for a five set win over the Golden Eagles, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-10.
For the Knights, Brittney Spugnardi excelled from the service line with 30 points in the two matches, including nine aces to lead the team in both categories. Lindsay Thomas added in 51 assists along with 16 service points, just behind Casey Challandes' 17. She also had four aces in the matches.
Kaley Huffman chipped in with 11 points while Kelsey Maurer added 10 and Lottie King had 22 points.
Christy Fulk paced the Northview front line attack with 19 kills, one ahead of King, and also had 11 blocks while patrolling the net. King added five with Heather Palmer blocking six shots and Thomas returning four balls to sender.
Huffman topped the squad with 11 digs in the games with Challandes next with 10 and Spugnardi adding eight. Maurer and King added seven.
The victory moves to the Knights to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the WIC with a match a road match tonight versus West Vigo at 6 p.m.
The Northview junior varsity also took part in matches with Sullivan and Brown County on Saturday and also came away with victories.
The Knights won the first match in three sets, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-18 as Nikki Mogan led the team with 20 points with Traci Sanders next with 19 points. Cari Laue had 18 points with Ashley Hull chipping in with eight points and both Chelsea Mershon and Emma Koehler adding seven.
The JV squad is now 7-3 overall and also 3-0 in the WIC.
The Knights' 'C' squad played in the Terre Haute North Tournament on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches.
The Knights defeated Terre Haute North in their first match 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 before falling in the championship match to Bloomington South, 17-25, 20-25.
Mallory Heffner led the squad with 15 service points and had nine aces while Brittaney Searing led with 16 kills.
Abby Birkey had 12 points, four aces and 13 kills with Andrea James adding 12 points. Olivia Kumpf had six points, three aces and led the way with 27 assists.
The 'C' team will next play at Sullivan in a three-way match with the Golden Arrows and Linton on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
