Close point races determine LPS track champs

Thursday, September 23, 2004

The final points have been tallied and season points titles have been determined at Lincoln Park Speedway.

Two of the classes came down to the final evening of racing last Saturday as Terre Haute's Lloyd Walls just inched past Travis Heramb by three slim points, 1,005 to 1,002, placing second in the last feature of the season. Heramb placed 14th on the night.

Greencastle's Derrall Smallwood slipped back to third place, scoring 986 points, when an early race incident ended his evening early with a 20th place finish in the feature.

Terre Haute drivers dominated the top of the Bomber points chase as six of the top-seven cars were piloted by Vigo County racers. Harry Shepard finished sixth with Michael Wright in seventh. Putnamville's Gregg Riser missed the final night of racing but still managed to place eighth, just 12 points back of Wright with David Bumgardner II in ninth and Ron Wallen Sr. in 10th.

In the sprint car points chase, Bloomington's Bobby Stines cruised to the final victory with a total of 649 points, defeating Aaron Mosley by 78 points.

Shawn Krockenberger finished up in third followed by Kevin Chambers of Bloomington while Jimmy Laser was fifth, Kent Christian was sixth. Brazil native Doug Heck placed seventh in overall points with Kenny Lacey in eighth.

Craig Conyer edged past Greencastle's Paul Bumgardner for the Modified season title with Joey Cox in third and James Tumey in fourth place and Lonnie Cassity in fifth.

Chris Brewer of Bainbridge placed sixth and Jimmy Hayden of Coatsville was seventh in season points. Tom Bixler Jr. and Schuyler Nahre finished in a tie for eighth with Josh Boller, also of Bainbridge, finishing in 10th.

Doug McCullough took home the season title in Super Stocks with 1,071 points and seven feature victories this year to finish ahead of second place Dave Kikendall Jr.'s 987.

Fillmore's Curt Leonard was third overall followed by AJ Smith and Brazil's Kirby Morrow was fifth followed by Aaron Zellers in sixth. Fellow Fillmore drivers Lloyd Bumgardner and Jeff Starks finished up seventh and eighth followed by Donnie Smiley and David Wallen.

After a break this weekend, Lincoln Park Speedway will host the 10th Annual Racin'-Fest on Saturday, Oct. 2 with sprint cars racing for a $2,000 paycheck in a 30-lap A Main with a second feature paying off at $500.

The Modifieds and Bombers will be on tap as well Saturday night and there will also be open pits following the race and a large bonfire and party following the evening's festivities. Make plans to attend the party where there will be special awards presented. Admission will be just $10 with racing to kickoff at 5:30 p.m.
