Bettenbrock and Pugh win at Shakamak

In Saturday's Shakamak Invitational at Jasonville, Clay County runners took the individual titles as Northview's Emily Pugh dominated the girls race in winning by more than a full minutes. Clay City's Logan Bettenbrock was the boys' champion, edging Andy Bilskie of South Knox by 11 seconds for the title.

The Clay City Eels came up short in their bid for the boys' team title as South Knox, led by a second, third and seventh place finish, scored 43 team points to the Eels' 65.

Bettenbrock led the Eels with the overall victory in a time of 17:27 while teammate Dustin Souder crossed the line in fifth place in 17:44. Adam Schroer was 18th with Tyler Moon in 20th, Cole Schroer in 21st, Austin Vansickle was 25th and Ryan Sutton was 39th.

West Vigo placed third as a team followed by Northview, Sullivan, North Montgomery, Linton, Eastern Greene, Shakamak, Riverton Parke and North Knox.

Pugh won the girls race by running a 15:30 to defeat Olivia Umphries of West Vigo who crossed the line in 16:34.

Kim Deakins of the Knights was seventh for Northview as Owen Valley got past Western Indiana Conference foe West Vigo, 62 to 68 for the team title with Eastern Greene in third, Northview in fourth, Linton was fifth followed by North Montgomery, Riverton Parke and Clay City.

In the junior varsity boys race, Matt Vansickle placed third in 20:05 and Kyle Grassick was 11th.

Northview will be back in action on Wednesday at home versus South Putnam while the Eels will compete in the Tri-River Conference Meet at Shakamak.
