Cheek leads Knights to fourth state finals berth

Monday, September 27, 2004

Mary Beth Tribble shot a 90 for Northview in regional play on Saturday.

One year after placing second to top-ranked Evansville Memorial in regional golf action, the Knights got their rematch at Otis Park in Bedford, IN on Saturday afternoon.

Once more Evansville was top-ranked and showed their might by winning this year's Bedford North Lawrence Regional, but the Knights also flexed their 19th ranked muscle in qualifying for the state finals for the fourth time in five years with a third place team finish.

A year after a second place score of 372 behind Evansville's 321, the Knights carded a 363 which was good for third place, just behind Seymour who rallied to overtake Northview by one stroke.

The rally by Seymour ended Terre Haute North's season with a sixth place round of 371 which was just behind fourth place Jennings County's 367 and Jasper's 368. Floyd Central was seventh with a 381, Boonville was eighth at 382 and Evansville North was ninth at 392.

Northview senior Brittney Cheek led the Knights in scoring with a round of 83 with sophomore Millie Akers recording an 88 and freshman Mary Beth Tribble shooting a 90. Senior Maggie Kirchner shot a 102 and sophomore Madason Kirchner had a 103 for the Knights who placed in a tie for 12th in last year's state finals competition.

Three members of this year's regional team also competed in last year's state finals as Cheek recorded a two round score of 166 which was good for 15th in the state as an individual.

Linton's Rachel Pruett, competing as an individual, was medalist on Saturday with a one-under par 72.

Kellie Marshall of Jennings County shot a 75 to advance as an individual and Maggie Wood of Boonville also moved on with a 77.

State Finals competition begins on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with individuals not on advancing teams teeing off.

Northview will kick off their round at The Legends Course of Indiana at approximately 8:09 a.m. as Tribble will have honors. She will be followed by Maggie Kirchner nine minutes later with Madison Kirchner, Akers and Cheek to follow.
