While Northview's Emily Pugh might not have been completely happy with her semistate finish at the Indiana University Golf Course, her fifth place finish qualifies her for a return to familiar territory.
Pugh will return to the Wabash Valley to run in the Indiana High School State Cross Country Finals on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute.
The only reason Pugh might be a little unhappy with her fifth place finish is that she was running third heading into the final few hundred meters when she was caught by Kacie Klem of Southridge and Lyndsay Overton of New Albany who just edged out Pugh for third and fourth place.
Kelsey Page of Silver Creek crossed the finish line with the top finish in 15:05 with Kayla Alexander of Terre Haute North in second place with a time of 15:25. Klem was third in 15:30 followed by Overton's 15:34 which was the same time as Pugh.
Silver Creek easily won the team competition with 85 points to beat Bloomington North and South who each had 169 team points. Terre Haute North will advance to the state finals as a team with their fourth place finish with 173, narrowly edging out Jasper with 175 points.
In the boys' event, Max Gustaitis of Bloomington North was first overall with a time of 16:13, but Bloomington South was the team champion with 99 points to beat out Edgewood's 129. Heritage Hills was third with 158 followed by Evansville Mater Dei (164) and Bloomington North's 172.
Rain dampened the course before the girls race began and light rain fell during their race before becoming a downpour during the boys race. The rain made for less than ideal conditions and slippery footing for racers on Saturday.
With her finish, Pugh qualifies for her second consecutive state finals, which ironically were run at the IU Golf Course last year. This year Pugh will have the opportunity to run on a very familiar course at Bird Gibson for the state finals which are slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the boys race at 1:45 p.m.
