Knights fall short of Arrows in Clabber Girl championship

Monday, November 15, 2004

Opponents of the Northview Knights certainly are well aware of 6'5 junior center Julie Whitted, but after her MVP performance in the Hi-99 Clabber Girl Classic tourney, everyone's eyes are open wide.

Unfortunately for Northview fans, Sullivan took home the tournament title over the defending champion Knights on Saturday with a 47-43 victory.

Northview basketball fans might not be happy with not repeating as Clabber Girl Classic Tourney champions, but the Knights have come a long way over the past several years when players and fans were thrilled to be advancing to an evening contest. Even as recently as Tuesday of last week, their was a hint of dismay after a tough loss to Mooresville in the season opener.

However, over a three game stretch on Friday and Saturday, the Knights were looking much improved on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

After Whitted hit a game-winning jumper on Friday versus Terre Haute South as part of a 23 point night, she posted a 27 point, 18 rebound, five block effort as the Knights defeated Terre Haute North 46-43 in Saturday's semifinal.

The win sent Northview into the title game against Western Indiana Conference rival Sullivan.

However, after two emotional wins, the Knights came up just short of the championship, 47-43.

The Golden Arrows got out to an 11-6 lead through one period of play before Northview ran off seven straight points on two baskets by Whitted an a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Lexee Hayes. However, Sullivan then held the Knights scoreless over four minutes before Laura McCrea hit a rebound bucket before the halftime break. Sullivan would take a 21-15 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Sullivan looked to have Northview on the ropes when they went on a 13-2 run as Kenna Smith dropped in a pair of long range 3-pointers.

Northview, however, would have none of it.

Trailing 41-26, the Knights stifled Sullivan as Northview scored the next 11 points in the game to get within 41-37 in the final period.

But from there the Knights seemed to run out of gas as Alana Bradford scored the only six points of the final period for Sullivan and the Knights could get no closer than their final four point deficit.

Whitted was once again a force with 21 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks in the contest. Casey Challandes scored eight points with McCrea adding six in the game.

Against Terre Haute North, the Knights zone defense forced the Patriots into a perimeter based offense that misfired all night.

The Patriots hoisted up 34 3-point shots, making just seven in the game, and shot just 26 percent from the field.

Meanwhile, Northview overcame a 17-11 deficit late in the first quarter as Whitted scored the next 11 points in the game to give Northview a 22-17 advantage in the third period.

The Knights weren't able to put the game away, hitting just 10-of-23 free throws in the game and North's Laura Burdick drilled two, late 3-pointers to get the Patriots as close as 44-43 with 40 seconds remaining.

McCrea would hit a pair of clutch free throws for the Knights and got a key rebound in the closing seconds as the Knights won a second close contest versus a Vigo County rival.

For Northview, who has improved dramatically since their opening loss, the Knights will travel to Riverton Parke on Tuesday night.

Sullivan's Ally McKinley and Alana Bradford were part of the six player all-tourney team that was sponsored by Mann Law Firm. North's Laura Burdick and Molly Williams made the team with Brittany Butler of South and Sam Stahl of Owen Valley.

Whitted's MVP award, sponsored by the 181st Fighter Wing of the Air Guard was the second consecutive award for the Knights after 2004 graduate Whitney Medworth won last season.
