Bassett and Braves steal the show at boys jamboree

Monday, November 22, 2004

TERRE HAUTE -- When the curtain rose on the 2004-05 boys basketball season on Friday night, the Terre Haute South Braves and star guard Armon Bassett spent much of the night in the spotlight.

While the Northview Knights used the evening as an audition for a roster of 15 players all looking for playing time on the varsity squad, a deep and experienced Braves squad pressed West Vigo into submission in the first quarter on the way to a 58-39 combined Knights and Braves win over the host North Patriots and Vikings.

Bassett showed why he might be the most talented player in the Wabash Valley this year when he hit all five of his first period shots, including a pair of 3-pointers and tallied a game-high 24 points in two periods of part time work.

Meanwhile, Northview, looking to replace seven seniors from last year's regional finalist squad, used Friday's time to take a look at a bevy of young guards.

Assistant coach Tony Trout, holding the reigns until head coach Mitch Lancaster returns full time to the bench, substituted liberally to get players game experience. "I saw some good things tonight," commented Trout. "We're trying to develop our big guys inside. Our guards are young, for some of them this was their first varsity game and I think there were some nervous jitters."

The Knights got a team-high six points from 6'7 frontliner Heath Chamberlain and got five from guard Wade Thacker. Experienced guard Shawn Hughes did an admirable job in the first period versus North before leaving with an undisclosed injury incurred in a pileup. He did not play in the second session for the Knights.

Terre Haute South rang up a 25-4 advantage in the first period versus an overwhelmed West Vigo squad who turned the ball over 10 times to the aggressive Braves' ball pressure.

Terrence Littlefield added nine points on perfect four-of-four shooting from the field and Travis Davis chipped in with five points.

But by far the most notice went to Bassett who was virtually unguardable against the Vikings and still scored 10 points versus North despite playing only a handful of minutes in the quarter won by South, 16-13.

The Patriots were led by junior Jason Gilmore who scored seven points, pacing a balanced North attack. Pat Hancewicz scored six points, Nate Blank added five and Justin Hall contributed four.

While the Knights struggled with their shooting, hitting at a 26 percent (6-of-23 from the field), they also played tough against a much more experienced Patriots team that played South very close. Northview downed West Vigo 8-4 in the final period and did not allow a successful fieldgoal to the Vikings who were 0-8 from the field in the quarter.

For Trout, his concentration was on the offense in preparation for the Knights Nov. 27 opener against Martinsville. "I'm concerned about our turnovers tonight," he noted. "We've got to do a better job of getting into our offense."

The Knights will have a full week in preparation for the visiting Artesians for the home contest that tips off at 6 p.m.
