Northview wrestlers open season successfully

The Northview wrestling squad kicked off their season successfully with a 4-1 mark at the Bloomington North tournament on Saturday.

The Knights only loss was to Bloomington North (29-43) while defeating Brown County (67-9), Paoli (80-0), New Albany (43-24) and Mitchell (69-6).

On the day, Northview had four grapplers who had a perfect 5-0 afternoon.

At 112 pounds, junior Austin Nicosin picked up a pair of pins over Brown County and New Albany while getting a forfeit versus Paoli and earning decisions over Mitchell and Bloomington North.

Sophomore Chris Dean was unbeaten at 145 pounds with a pin over Paoli and decisions versus Bloomington, New Albany and Mitchell and a forfeit versus the Golden Eagles.

Senior Jeremiah Allen went a perfect 5-0 on the day with perhaps the most dominating performance. Allen picked up five falls in the tournament with each one of them coming in the first period against his opponents.

At heavyweight, Tony Sanabria got a forfeit against New Albany and a decision versus Brown County before pinning his competitor versus New Albany, Bloomington and Mitchell.

Three more wrestlers from the Knights picked up four wins on the afternoon with freshman Caleb Dutrow, at 140 pounds, earning a pin versus Paoli and forfeits versus Brown County, Bloomington and Mitchell.

In the 152 pound class, Brent Withers won four matches on Saturday coming via pin over Brown County along with decisions over Paoli and New Albany and a forfeit over Mitchell.

At the 172 pound level, junior Greg Stultz got a forfeit versus Brown County before getting a technical fall versus Paoli, a decision against Mitchell and a pin over New Albany.

Senior Cory Grigsby (130 pounds), sophomore Lucas Boyd (125), freshman Beau Pingleton (119), freshman Josh Longo (103) and freshman Kurt Doughty (160) all earned three wins on the day.

At 135 pounds, freshman Brian Griffin split duties, but was 2-1 on the day with junior Michael McClelland went 2-0.

Perhaps one of the very few low moments of the tournament for the Knights came as senior Cordell Allen suffered a broken collarbone at the 160 pound class in his first match.

The Knights will open their home season on Wednesday versus Bloomington South at 6 p.m.
