SPENCER -- Spurred by a five-some of seniors, the Northview Knights picked up a Western Indiana Conference dual meet victory, 45-34.
All five seniors were victorious, all by pin, as Northview gained momentum headed into their own invitational on Saturday morning.
"Our seniors really stepped up tonight," commented coach Dan Mikesell. "All five of them won, that's how you win dual meets. That's 30 points right there."
Opening the meet at 135 pounds, Owen Valley got on the board first as Ryan Thomas earned a fall over Northview's Mike McClelland at the 3:05 mark of the match. But the Knights got a forfeit victory by Caleb Detrow at 140 pounds and Chris Dean came up with big boost at 145 pounds with a win over Casey Bybee.
Bybee came out the aggressor, pulling out to a first period 5-0 lead with a takedown and near fall points. But Dean earned an escape point and a takedown of his own to pull within 5-3 to close the first period.
In the second period Dean evened the match headed into the final two minute period. In the third period the two grapplers were locked together facing each other, but Dean was able to step through to earn two points to go ahead 7-5 as time dwindled in the match. He was able to ride out the time and earn the victory that gave Northview a 9-6 advantage in the team match.
"That was a good win for Chris (Dean)," noted Mikesell. "He has to build on that win. Bybee is tough. Chris (Dean) has to build on this and realize that he can beat good wrestlers."
Brent Withers followed up Dean's victory with what Mikesell called a 'pivotal match'.
Withers trailed 5-2 after Tony Merchant picked up three back points. Merchant extended that lead to 8-4 in the second period, but Withers would gain a reversal and put Merchant on his back for a pin at the 3:08 mark. "Brent's (match) was pivotal," said Mikesell. "He stayed alive in there when (Merchant) had him on his back. He hung in there and got a big win for us."
Gatlin Ferro extended the Knights' team lead with a pin over Ricardo Amador-Mae at the 2:58 mark. The victory for Ferro came in his first match of the year for Northview after recovering from an injury. "I was pretty pleased with (Gatlin's) effort tonight," said Mikesell. "He's a good athlete, this is only his second season of wrestling so he's still a little green, but if he keeps working hard and listening to the coaches he's going to be 10 times better by the end of the year."
The Knights, after losing at 189 by fall, led the Patriots 21-16 headed into the final two upper weight classes.
At 215 and 275, Jeremiah Allen and Tony Sanabria, both seniors, dominated their opponents to earn falls and go up 33-16. "Jeremiah really sucked it up tonight," said Mikesell of his senior 215-pounder who advanced to 11-1 this year. Sanabria also earned his 11th win with a fall at the 2:26 mark.
A loss at the 103 mark pulled Owen Valley within 33-22 but Austin Nicosin gained a forfeit at 112 to pull out to a 39-22 advantage. The Patriots closed the gap with pins at 119 and 125.
Leading 39-34, senior Corey Grigsby stepped up to the plate and pinned Steve Miller just one minute into the match to clinch the match for the Knights.
The team victory gives the Knights momentum heading into Saturday's Northview Invitational where they will see the Patriots again along with Brown County, West Vigo, South Vermillion, Plainfield and Terre Haute North. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
