- Northview girls hold off determined Vikings squad -

Monday, December 13, 2004

Northview guard Jennifer Gregg makes a pass to the interior for a teammate during Friday's win over West Vigo. Gregg had six points in the game.

The Northview Knights didn't shoot the ball particularly well on Friday night and they didn't do a great job of holding onto the ball either, but their defense held West Vigo to an even worse shooting percentage and the Knights held off the Vikings 35-34.

The Knights looked poised to runaway with the game in the early going, holding an 11-3 lead through one period as West Vigo couldn't solve the interior pass to 6'5 center Julie Whitted. She would score eight of her 16 points in the first quarter and haul down three boards and block two shots.

But after trailing 18-8 at the halftime break, the Vikings began to chip away at the Knights' lead aided by five Northview turnovers in the third quarter.

The Vikings trailed 25-14 after a Jennifer Gregg jumper, but would run off the next seven points on a Kara VanGilder bucket, Kea Silcock basket and a 3-pointer from Amanda Payne.

Holding on to a 25-21 lead, the Knights scored the final basket of the period on a rebound hoop by Whitted to extend their advantage to 27-21.

In the final period, Jenny Cuffle got the Vikings within 29-26 on a 3-pointer and Silcock would follow with a free throw before VanGilder tied the score at the 5:51 mark with a basket.

Whitted came back for back-to-back baskets for Northview and after a Silcock basket, would score one again to give Northview a 35-31 lead with just 1:21 left in the game.

Cuffle would answer with a huge 3-pointer and Northview's Laura McCrea would miss on the offensive end on a layin attempt. The Vikings however would turn the ball over in the waning seconds as Casey Challandes intercepted a pass and Lexee Hayes was fouled with 7.6 seconds on the clock.

At the line with a one-and-one attempt, she would miss the front end of the charity tosses, but Whitted would grasp the rebound and the Knights were able to run out the clock for the victory.

Whitted had 10 rebounds in the game with Challandes pulling down eight boards and scoring three points. Jennifer Gregg had six points and Laura McCrea had five with six rebounds.

The Knights will face off with Terre Haute North on Tuesday night beginning at 6 p.m.
