The Clay City Eels halted a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 53-39 win in the seventh place game of the Greene County Tourney.

White River Valley later won the championship with a 41-37 decision over Shakamak.

The Wolverines got late free throws by Mike Powell and Ryan Karr to hold off a determined Lakers squad in the closing minutes.

Powell scored a team-high 17 points and added 13 rebounds as White River Valley won their fourth straight game and their second consecutive Greene County Tourney.

For the Eels however, the tournament got off to a rough beginning with opening losses to Linton and Vincennes Rivet. But in Saturday's first game, Clay City came out quick with a 14-5 advantage through one quarter of action.

Union got untracked offensively in the second quarter to score 15 of their own points, but the Eels still held a 28-20 lead at the break.

In the second half Clay City was able to hold serve, placing three players hitting double figures and another just missing.

Garrett Thatcher tallied 16 points to lead the Eels with Josey Vansickle adding 14 and Thomas Roeschlein adding 10. Brock Dyer chipped in with nine for the Eels who are now 4-6 overall.

In the consolation game, Linton picked up a 66-53 win over Eastern (Greene) and in the fifth place contest, Vincennes Rivet won 64-56 over North Central.

Up next for Clay City will be a Tuesday matchup with South Putnam who has won three of their last four games.
