Northview hoops teams pick up WIC victories

Monday, January 24, 2005

With frigid temperatures swirling around the Wabash Valley, the Northview basketball teams stayed hot with a pair of victories over South Vermillion on Saturday night.

The boys' team, coming off a marathon four overtime victory over Owen Valley on Wednesday, made a 12 point halftime lead hold up by defeating the Wildcats 64-54.

The girls team meanwhile won for the eight time in nine games with a 58-25 thumping of the host Wildcats.

In the boys contest, Northview got 17 points apiece from sophomore Brinn Meunier and senior Heath Chamberlain to earn their third conference win of the season.

The Knights were able to outscore South Vermillion 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 31-19 lead at halftime, but allowed the Wildcats to climb back in the game in the third period.

South Vermillion closed to 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Knights got a strong offensive surge in the last period, scoring 21 points to hold off the Wildcats who dropped to the .500 mark at 8-8 overall.

Shawn Hughes hit for 12 points for Northview and Nick Wells added nine for the Knights who improved to 8-7 this season.

Todd Byram led South Vermillion with 17 points and Cole Milam added 10 in the loss.

In the girls contest, the Northview defense stifled South Vermillion in a dominant first half performance, holding the Wildcats to just five points. Northview meanwhile jumped out to a 15 point advantage at the midway point and then added a 38 point second half performance to put away the host squad.

Lexee Hayes scored a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers and senior Laura McCrea added 11 for the Knights. Julie Whitted added eight and Jennifer Gregg chipped in with six.
