Great matchups in area sectionals

Monday, February 7, 2005

Girls basketball sectional action begins on Tuesday, February 8 for many teams across the midstate with some exciting matchups in the first round.

The Class 3A Brown County Sectional will be a bear to advance from with three teams boasting 14 or more wins, including the host squad who is currently ranked 10th with a 16-2 mark. The Eagles also got the luck of first round bye and will face Edgewood who has the fewest wins of any team in the sectional with a 7-12 mark.

In Tuesday's action, Greencastle brings a 14-6 mark into their last regular season contest with Monrovia. The Tiger Cubs will face off with a tough Sullivan team who has a 16-4 mark with a contest with Owen Valley left in the regular season.

In the other first round game, Owen Valley will face off with an improving West Vigo team that is 8-11 after a loss to Terre Haute South on Tuesday night. The Patriots are coming off a big win over Bloomfield that snapped the Cardinals five game winning streak. The Vikings have dropped two straight after winning five in a row and will have the unenviable task of controlling one of the state's leading scorers in Owen Valley's Samantha Stahl who averages nearly 25 points per game as a sophomore.

The sectional also boasts the Eagles' outstanding Mara Freyshour who is slated to attend Florida State and is one of the more exciting players to watch in a game.

Over at Cascade's 2A sectional, Tuesday night will feature Monrovia (8-11) against South Vermillion (2-16) with a pair of games on Wedensday night.

Tri-West (6-14) will face Cloverdale (7-12) in the first game and the host Cadets (12-7) will get a rematch with unbeaten, and 3rd ranked South Putnam (19-0) in the nightcap.

The winner of Tuesday's game gets to face North Putnam (11-8) on Friday with a game between Wednesday's winners to follow.

There is no shortage of familiarity between the teams with all three of the Putnam County teams having faced off at least twice already this season, except the Cougars and Eagles who played just once.

The Eagles return nearly intact after advancing to the regional final last season before bowing out to North Knox. South Putnam finished 24-2 this year and are one of the most experienced teams in the sectional.

In Class A action the shootout for the Clay City Sectional winner should also prove interesting with no clear-cut dominant team. The Eels and Bulldogs drew a bye in the first round and receive the benefit of only having to win two games as compared to three.

For a pair of defending state champions, the road begins with a considerable challenge this season.

In Class 4A, defending titlist North Central (Indianapolis) (12-7) will get an opening date with 2nd-ranked Hamilton Southeastern (18-1) while last year's runner up, Warsaw (11-8) will take on East Noble (6-13).

Defending Class A champion Tri-Central (13-7) hosts their own sectional this year but has the unenviable task of taking on fourth-ranked Southern Wells (16-2) in their opening matchup. Last year's Class A runner-up Washington Catholic (12-7) takes on Vincennes Rivet (2-19).

In Class 3A, Brebeuf (14-5) won their first state title last year and will take on Crawfordsville (10-9) with 3A runnerup, Fort Wayne Bishops Luers (16-2) will take on Fort Wayne Concordia (9-8).

Rochester (6-13) won their first state title last year in 2A and will get a contest with fourth-ranked Winamac (18-1) in the opener and runnerup Heritage Christian (8-11) will take on Park Tudor (1-18).
