Corey Grigsby (top) became Northview's all-time victory leader with his victories on Saturday during the Bloomington South Regional. Grigsby will advance to semistate action with his regional title.

BLOOMINGTON -- Corey Grigsby is going back to the wrestling semistate at Evansville's Roberts Stadium. Only this time he's going as a regional champion.

The Northview High School senior won the 130-pound championship on Saturday at Bloomington South High School.

"I wrestled hard. I didn't hold anything back. I've been (in the regional) twice before and wasn't able to finish out," Grigsby said after earning his third trip to the semistate.

Grigsby will be joined by teammates Chris Dean and Tony Sanabria on the regional trip. Dean (28-11) finished third at 145-pounds and Sanabria (37-4) earned a third place at 275 pounds.

However, as a regional champion Grigsby (33-5) will have an easier route in the semistate. He will receive a first-round bye, according to Northview coach Dan Mikesell, which means Grigsby is one victory away from the state championship meet in Indianapolis.

"It sure makes you feel a lot better knowing you're one win away from the state meet," Mikesell said.

Starting the day with 123-career victories, Grigsby set the school record while winning all three matches at the regional.

In the opening round, Grigsby pinned Josh Cardinal in the second period at 3:49. Grigsby tied the school record in the semifinals with a 4-3 decision over Columbus North's Brad Balmer. And, fittingly, Grigsby became Northview's career record holder with a 12-4 decision over Tony Withrow of Bloomington South in the championship match.

"He wrestled really, really well today. Hopefully he hit his stride at the right time," Mikesell said.

Grigsby, who now has 126 career wins, broke the record set last year by Austin Stahley, who also won the 130-pound regional championship.

Grigsby went to the semistate last year in another weight class.

"I knew my whole weight class was going to be tough. I prepared for it all week," Grigsby said.

Northview's Dean was a surprise to everyone by coach Mikesell. Dean, a sophomore, scored a 13-3 win over Josh Klakamp of Columbus East in the first round. In the semifinals, he was pinned by Seymour's Patrick Smith in the second period at 2:43. But Dean bounced back in the consolation match, earning a 4-3 decision over Western Indiana Conference rival Casey Bybee of Owen Valley.

Northview's Sanabria didn't have to look or think very hard about his competition in the 275-pound class. Five of the eight wrestlers were from the either Brazil area or in the WIC.

Sanabria pinned Madison's Wes Ault in the opening round in the second period at 2:12. The second round, he ran into his friend from Terre Haute North, LaShawn Tyler, and lost an 8-3 decision. Later, Sanabria was one of the first to congratulate Tyler for winning the title.

In the consolation round, Sanabria and Sullivan's Tom Nero faced off for the fourth time this season. Sanabria came out a 6-4 winner.

Northview nearly had five in the semistate. Austin Nicoson and Gatlin Ferro fell one win short of semistate berths, each finishing fourth.

In the consolation match for third place, Nicoson lost an 8-5 decision to Michael Bartlett of Southwestern at 112 pounds. Ferro lost a 5-2 verdict to Chris Wojciechowski of Bloomington North at 171 pounds.

The early rounds didn't go as well for Beau Pingleton at 119 pounds, Brent Withers at 152 and Greg Stultz. All lost their first and only match.
