Girls basketball regional berths were awarded to teams on Saturday evening as Bloomfield earned the Clay City Sectional title with a convincing 72-45 victory over Union to take the A regional berth to the North Daviess Regional.

Bloomfield got a 20 point, 22 rebound effort from senior Ashley Thombleson and six different players scored more than seven points for the Cardinals who advanced to 16-7 this year and will face Loogootee (21-2) in their regional opener.

In the Class 4A Mooresville Sectional, the Martinsville Artesians (17-6) continued their strong run with a 51-47 victory versus the host Pioneers. The win was Martinsville's fifth straight and earns them a berth in the Bedford North Lawrence Regional against Jennings County (14-8).

In Class 2A, the South Putnam Eagles remained unbeaten with a strong effort in the Cascade Sectional championship contest.

The Eagles picked up a 72-47 victory as all five starters scored in double figures.

South Putnam led 20-4 after the first quarter and was able to hold the Cougars scoreless for nearly seven minutes during a 17-0 run that put the Eagles ahead 28-5 on the way to their third victory over North this season.

In the regional, the Eagles might have gotten a bit of a break as Forest Park downed previously unbeaten and No. 2 Southridge in the sectional championship game, 44-40.

But the Eagles will have to face off with the Rangers in the 10 a.m. regional opener which will be hosted by Forest Park (15-8).
