Clay City girls fall in final seconds

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

The Clay City girls basketball team came out on the short end of a 58-57 season ending sectional loss to the Union Bulldogs on Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored the final six points of the game, including the game-winning free throw with just seven seconds remaining in the contest.

The Eels jumped out to a 13-2 advantage in the first quarter and led 15-7 after one quarter. However, Union rallied behind an 11-5 run to knot the score at 18-apiece on Kallie Gambill's free throw and the teams were tied at 20-20 at halftime.

After scoring just five points during the second quarter, Clay City got rolling on offense in the third period and rang up a 24 point quarter to take a four point lead into the fourth quarter, 44-40.

Cameron Gerber put the Eels ahead 57-52 with 1:33 remaining in the game, but then the Bulldogs began their final surge.

Sasha Stanton knocked down a 3-pointer with a minute remaining and Gambill tied the score by rebounding her own miss with 20 seconds remaining in the game. From there, the Eels couldn't find the basket and Stanton hit the winning free to complete the scoring.

For the Eels, Bryleigh Schopmeyer finished her prep career with a big 18 point night on eight-of-15 shooting from the field and both Whitney McWilliams and Gerber tallied 15 points. Gerber also pulled down 13 rebounds.

Union advanced to the sectional title game where they fell to Bloomfield 72-45. The Cardinals advance to face Loogootee at the North Daviess Regional on Saturday.
