The Bloomfield Cardinals bid for a state finals appearance came up just a few seconds short on Saturday versus fifth-ranked Northeast Dubois.
Bloomfield led for much of the game, including a six point advantage beginning the fourth quarter. But the Jeeps overcame a 50-44 deficit with fewer than two minutes remaining to pick up a 52-50 win. The victory propels them into the 1A state finals against 18-7 Tri-Central who defeated S.Central (LaPorte 49-47.
The underdog Cardinals who started an inexperienced lineup of three sophomores and a freshman alongside senior forward Ashley Thombelson, had the better of play for much of the game. Bloomfield held the Jeeps scoreless for nearly half of the first quarter while building a 26-19 halftime lead and a 34-23 advantage early in the third quarter. But the Jeeps scored nine straight points to get within 34-30.
In the closing moments, used their press to battle back and Tia Wineinger hit two free throws with 8.5 seconds left to tie and stole the Cardinals' inbounds pass that resulted in the game-winning layin with 2.5 seconds left.
Jessica Stout led the Cardinals with 14, Brooke Myers had 11 and Thombelson had 10 to go with 10 rebounds. Myers had 12 boards in the game.
