North Clay wins in WIC tuneup

North Clay geared up for this weekend's Western Indiana Conference track meet in style by picking up a pair of wins over South Vermillion on Thursday night.

The girls squad earned a convincing 85.5-22.5 victory over the Wildcats as Clara Butts won two events in the field events and Shandi Travis doubled in the high jump (4-10), which the Knights swept, and the 100 meter hurdles and then took home the 200 title as well.

In the 200, Kleiber cruised home in second with Yockey in third for the Knights. North Clay also swept the hurdles as Annie Smiley was the runnerup followed by Ashley Clarke. Smiley was runnerup in the high jump with her PR leap of 4-6 and Kylee Thacker was third. North Clay's girls also went 1-2-3 in the 100 meters with Cayla Yockey winning followed by Elle Kleiber and Thacker.

In the 400 meters, Carlee Bell was the winner, followed by Shelby Sands and Raven Enders. Corey Laue picked up the 800 victory followed by Ali Sharton.

Shelby Bass was third in the 3,200 and Laue was the winner in the 1,600 with Cassandra Barnett in second and Hallie Harbison in third place.

The relays also were won by the Knights as the squad of Yockey, Thacker, Kleiber and Stormi Raines won the 400 relay and the 1,600 relay team of Bell, Thacker, Sands and Raines won. North Clay's team of Brittany Schlegel, Jenny Gabriel, Jenny Junker and Enders was second.

North Clay's boys were also winners in the event and got a chance to rest some athletes while getting some big efforts from some other competitors.

Ryan Lutes was the runnerup in the 3,200 meters at 12:32, but cut more than a minute off his previous best time and Jake Musgrave came through in the shotput with a second place throw of 30-0 1/2 to place as the runnerup to Jordan Keller's toss of 40-11.

Keller won three events for the Knights, taking the top spot in the discus (124-11) and joined Matt Trout, Seth Wright and Drake Stevenson to win the 400 relay in 50.66.

Stevenson also had a strong meet by winning the 200 (26.97) ahead of Trout and was second in the long jump (15-5) and third in the 100 meters behind Wright. Trout also had a third place leap in the high jump.

In the distance events, Chris Smith won the 1,600 (5:21) ahead of Eli Kirby (5:35) who was the winner in the 800 (2:53) for North Clay. In the 3,200, E.C. Moody was third behind Lutes.

Cainan Reeves was the 110 hurdles runnerup (20.47) ahead of Joel Whittington (21.47) and in the 400, Jonathan Bradshaw was second in 1:03 ahead of Ryan Mafioli.

Next up for the Knights is the Western Indiana Conference meet at Edgewood today.
