Eels get big efforts in TRC track meet

Monday, May 9, 2005

LINTON -- Youth was served for the Clay City girls track team at the Tri-River Conference meet on Friday night as freshmen led the Eel team to a second place finish behind the Linton Miners.

The boys team was also a second place finisher, scoring 125 points to the Miners' 211 points. North Central was a close third followed by Shakamak and Eminence.

In the girls team race, the Eels scored 163 team points as Linton won with 215, using their depth to pick up the TRC title. North Central was third followed by Shakamak and Eminence.

For the girls, freshman Hannah Moore had an outstanding meet, winning three individual events (800, 1,600, 3,200) and joining Andrea Ladd, Danielle Steiner and Rachael Narlock to win the 400 relay with their best time of the season (54.06), less than three-hundreths of a second off the TRC record (53.8).

Moore trimmed 13 seconds off her seed time in the 800 meters to run a 2:35.37 to win by nearly six seconds. She also cut almost a minute from her 3,200 time to run a 13:07.73 for a comfortable victory. In the 1,600 she ran almost 16 seconds quicker than her seed to win once more for the Eels. Her 40 team points earned was a meet high.

Narlock also had a big meet to win the high jump (4-10), 300 hurdles (51.01) in a personal best and was part of the 400 relay squad. She was also fourth in the long jump to score 34 team points.

Andrea Ladd picked up valuable points for the Eels with a second in the 100 meters, a leg on the winning 400 relay, a third in the 400 meters along with a fourth in the 200.

Dustin Souder was the long jump winner (17-4) and Josey Vansickle was the runnerup from the Eels. Souder also earned second place finishes in the 800 and both the 1,600 and 3,200 relay events.

"We got a 1-2 finish in the long jump that we weren't expecting and Logan (Bettenbrock) ran a PR in the 1,600. (Dustin) Souder also ran his best time in the 800 for us," commented Clay City boys coach Keith Jones.

Logan Bettenbrock was second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200 meters to go with a leg in the 3,200 relay.

In throwing events, Andrew Marrs won the shotput with a throw of 43-3 and in the discus the Eels got a runnerup finish from Kyle Booe and a third from Jake Jackson.

"Andrew (Marrs) had his PR in the shotput for us," said Jones. "This time of year you just kind of do your best and let the chips fall. But I'm real proud of these kids."

The Eels also got third place finishes from Cole Schroer (110 HH, 300 H) and Jeff Schlack (400).

Other top finishes for the girls in the event were a victory by Sabrina Liechty in the shotput and a win in the discus from Kasey Waite. Liechty was third in the discus for the Eels. Rebecca Seymour placed third in the 300 hurdles and both Elizabeth Beyers (400) and Shawna Vencel (100) picked up fourth place finishes along with Lacey Rood in the 800.

The Eels will have the week ahead to prepare for the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference track meet next Friday at Linton.
