Northview returns for win at Forest Park Golf Course

Friday, August 12, 2005

The Northview Knights got a welcome trip back to their home course on Thursday afternoon, earning a win at Forest Park over Linton and Cloverdale in a 9-hole match.

The Knights recorded a team score of 159 to defeat Linton's 204. Cloverdale also shot a 204, but the Miners were the winners based on their fifth score. The Clovers did not have a fifth golfer on the team.

Northview's Mary Beth Tribble tied for medalist honors with Linton standout, Rachel Pruitt, each with a round of 37.

"Mary Beth had a good round for us," noted Northview coach Teresa Akers. "She got into a little trouble on #3 with a trible bogey, but came right back on #6 with an eagle, hitting in from about 120 yards."

The Knights also got another strong round from Jenae Huffman who shot an 87 at Rea Park on Tuesday and came back at Forest Park with a 39 that was second on the team. "We got a nice round from Jenae," said Akers afterwards. "She shot a 39 today, which is her first round under 40."

Millie Akers shot a round of 40 for Northview with Madison Kirchner scoring a 43 to round out the team scoring. Abby Smith shot a 45, Kayla Cooper a 48 and Madason Stevenson shot a 49 for the Knights.

While Northview won comfortably, Akers believes that the team has better rounds to come.

"I think we can do better than a 159," she said. "But for our first home match of the year it's okay. Everyone is showing improvement. We've still got some aspects we need to work on. We're working on our short game, we'd like to keep our putts per round to about 14."

The Knights also had rounds of 45 from Kayla Duregger, 50 from eighth grade manager, Heather Hughes, 58 from Heather Hughes and 62 from Jennifer Harris.

Today the Knights will test themselves in a bit of a rarity at Forest Park. Northview will play an 18-hole match versus a solid Jasper squad. According to Akers, the Knights have only played one official 18 hole match as a team at Forest Park, several years ago when the conference tourney was held at the course.

Tee time will be at 1 p.m. for the Knights and Wildcats.

Team Scores: Northview 159, Linton 204*, Cloverdale 204

*Linton was second based on fifth score, Cloverdale did not have a fifth golfer.
