Knights blast past Rockville in three sets to remain unbeaten

Tuesday, August 23, 2005

The Northview Knights were able to overwhelm visiting Rockville on Monday night in a three set match, 25-15, 25-11, 25-23.

The Rox just had no answer for the Northview hitters and made their own share of hitting errors that led to strings of unanswered runs for the Knights.

In the first set, Northview got a strong service game from Kyler Clark who started the game from the service line and ripped off four straight points to open a 5-1 lead for the Knights. At the end of the set she helped Northview extend a 16-9 lead by adding four more points at the line and Christy Fulk hammered down one kill and Lindsay Thomas found the hard court with a tip and a 20-13 Northview advantage.

Fulk and King would both heat up in the first set with a pair of kills apiece and Heather Palmer finished off the first set victory for the Knights. The Rox had their own share of trouble, only putting together one streak in which they held serve for more than one point. That streak that started when a Fulk kill attempt was dug back to the Knights and found the court. The Knights had a bit of their own trouble in the Rox streak as three straight kill attempts were dug back and just over the net for points. Fulk would end the streak with a kill that got Northview back on track for the first set win.

The Knights were more dominating in the second set, running out to a 9-1 lead at the outset of the game with Kaley Huffman at the service line. She'd get three straight aces after the Rox sent three straight kill attempts long.

Northview was off and running in the set, leading 20-8 late in the period and King rang up three kills as the Knights won comfortably by 14 points.

Rockville made a game of the third set, taking their first lead of the entire game at 6-3 and led as late as 20-18 as King blocked a shot and sent home a kill as Northview got within 21-20. Another kill tied the game up at 21-apiece. At 24-23 the Knights took the lead as Rockville had four hits to give Northview the serve and Rockville tipped a ball out to end the contest.

Brittney Spugnardi had 11 points at the service line and Clark had two aces to go with her nine points. Huffman had eight points in the game. King led the Knights with 15 kills with Fulk adding six. Thomas set up the Northview offense with 25 assists and Huffman added five digs. Both Spugnardi and Fulk had four digs as Northview improved to 4-0 overall this season with a match Thursday versus Edgewood at 6 p.m.

In the JV game, the Knights lost control of a 22-11 second set lead as Rockville rebounded to tie the game up at one set apiece and took the final set by a 15-14 count.

Olivia Kumpf had 17 service points with five aces and Hannah Emmert added eight points with six aces. Ashley Hull added four kills and had three blocks. Katie Timberman had three kills and Kumpf added six assists.
