The 2005 Northview golf team: (front row l-r) Abby Smith, Madason Stevenson, Jenae Huffman, Kayla Duregger, Erika Tucker and Kayla Cooper. (Back row l-r) Coach Teresa Akers, Sunny Shaw, Jennifer Harris, Savanah Pursell, Millie Akers, Madison Kirchner and Mary Beth Tribble.
The postseason kicks off on Saturday morning with IHSAA girls golf sectionals beginning around the state.
The Knights head into sectional play on the heels of an unbeaten, dual match season. Northview completed a 14-0 season this week by defeating Bloomington North with a score of 158 to 175 lead by Mary Beth Tribble's score of 38.
In a balanced attack, the Knights got nine-hole scores of 40 from Jenae Huffman, Millie Akers and Madison Kirchner who will all be competing on the postseason team.
The future is quite bright as well for the Knights with Huffman as the lone senior on the postseason squad.
The JV team earned a 187 to 237 win over the Cougars with Kayla Cooper scoring a 44 to lead the Knights ahead of Erika Tucker (45) and Kayla Duregger (45). Savanah Pursell scored a 53, Jennifer Harris a 58 and Sunny Shaw had a 63.
Cooper and Duregger each carded a 46 in a win over West Vigo to end the regular season with a 189 to 198 victory. Pursell shot a 48 and Tucker a 49.
Confidence should be high for Northview who is defending a one shot sectional victory at the Sullivan Elks Course last year.
The Knights edged Jasper 342-to-343 with Terre Haute North placing third with a round of 375. Each team advanced to regional play.
2004 Northview graduate, Brittney Cheek was the low medalist last year with an 18-hole score of 78.
Coming off back-to-back sectional championships, another title this year could set up an interesting home-and-home sort of series for the Knights and Jasper.
Both considered as favorites for the sectional, the Knights get to play for the title on their home course, Forest Park, on Saturday. If both the Knights and Jasper advance to regional play, the teams will head to Jasper Municipal Golf Course for the next round on Saturday, September 24.
Terre Haute North could also have something to say about who takes home the trophy.
The race for the individual championship should provide some great moments as Rachel Pruett of Linton will be a favorite. South Knox's Kara Waggoner along with Terre Haute South's Diana Price, North's Christine Dodson will also be tough with Jasper's Megan Scherle and Kate Brosmer in the mix as well.
The Knights' experience on the course will give their team an edge with all their players having a chance for medalist honors lead by Tribble, Huffman and Akers all in the mix.
Play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the Knights matched up in a later grouping with Jasper and Terre Haute North.
Abby Smith will be the first to tee for Northview at 11:15 a.m.
