The Northview boys soccer team earned at least a share of the Western Indiana Conference title on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Sullivan.
The Northview boys soccer team got their taste of a conference title by beating host Sullivan in Western Indiana Conference play, 1-0 on a goal by Shane Boyd.
The victory guarantees the Knights at least a share of the WIC title and either team they could possibly share the title with will have lost to Northview. The Knights could still win the championship outright if Brown County beats the Arrows and loses to either West Vigo or Edgewood.
In Tuesday's game, both squads had quality chances in the first half with the Knights' best opportunity coming from Jacob Lynch. His shot was saved on a last second stab by Sullivan's keeper.
"The first half we came out strong, but just couldn't finish the opportunities," commented Northview coach Todd LaComba.
However, in the second half, the bulk of the play was dominated by the Knights with Jiarus Martinez and Shane Boyd narrowly missing on shots.
With four minutes remaining in the game, Jordan Pond served a perfectly placed pass into Boyd who slid the shot past the keeper for the winning score.
Pond had 14 steals on the defensive end for Northview with Taylor Montague earning his seventh shutout of the season in net. The win lowers his goals-against-average to a minuscule 1.05.
The Knights are now 9-5-1 overall and 5-1 in the WIC.
In the JV game, the Knights dropped a 5-2 decision with Nick Hensler and Brennan McCullen scoring for the Knights and Stephen Taylor assisting on one score.
Next up for the JV is a tourney at Terre Haute South on Saturday with the first game at 10 a.m. The varsity faces Mooresville on the road on Oct. 6.
