Terre Haute North and South's girls teams finished 16th and 20th respectively at the IHSAA State Cross Country Finals on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.

TERRE HAUTE -- Only a year ago, Pendleton Heights senior Brock Hagerman faded badly at the end of the IHSAA State Cross Country finals and ended up 26th as Justin Roeder cruised to the individual title.

This year was a different story altogether.

Hagerman stayed strong throughout the race contested at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course and the result was a state championship, which was also the first in cross country for his school.

De'Sean Turner might not be completely happy with his runnerup spot for Warren Central, but he'll certainly take the fact that his squad took home their first team cross country championship, edging out Valparaiso in the second closest points battle in history.

The Warriors, paced by Turners' runnerup 15:25, also got a seventh place finish from Ondraius Richardson to beat out the Vikings by just 12 points.

Hagerman meanwhile cruised to the victory by 12 seconds, finishing in 15:13 while Roeder, the defending champion, finished in 18th overall for Hamilton Southeastern.

Terre Haute North finished in 20th place as a team and were led by Josh Bedford who finished in 62nd followed by Zach Mayhew in 63rd but then dropped off to Kevin Depasse in 146th

The race was contested in ideal conditions with blue skies and temperatures in the low 60's and runners certainly took advantage of the great weather.

Times were certainly a testament as Roeder's winning time in 2004 was 13 seconds slower than his 2005 18th place time.

Over in the girls event, Westfield's young squad was incredibly impressive in taking the team championship with just 88 points with Valparaiso in second with 126 points.

The Shamrocks placed two runners in the top four and all five scoring runners in the top 65 in downing the three time defending champion Valparaiso squad and reversed the results of last year when they finished second to the Vikings.

Westfield was led by the third place finish of sophomore Maggie Bingham who was followed by junior Kristina Krasich. Sophomore Breanne Ehrman was 22nd with freshman Kaitlyn Love in 24th and senior Katlin Luter was 65th to give the Shamrocks their second state title since 1998.

The race was won in blistering fashion by Alexandra Banfich of Culver Academies. She took over just past the midpoint and ran to a victory in 14:05.1 to beat out Sarah Kehe of Chesterton who ran a 14:15.7.

Terre Haute North and South were a bit disappointed in their finishes with the Patriots placing 16th and the Braves in 20th as a team.

Patriot senior Kayla Alexander came home in 44th place in 15:00 followed by Amy Hamilton (98th), Megan Hamilton (99th), Liz Marietta (138th), Kathleen Smith (141st), Macie Jackson (144th) and Anna Claretto in 159th.

The Braves were led by Kristi Twitchell in 115th followed by Kate Goeller in 122nd, Ariel Hall in 123rd, Brianne Steppe (131st), Adriane Wunderlich in 134th, Liz Beckendorf in 140th and Christina Carrick in 162nd.
