The North Clay eighth grade basketball team opened up the season with a comfortable 44-24 victory over visiting Sarah Scott on Thursday night.

The Knights got off to a 7-0 lead to start the game and were able to shut out the Scotties in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Leading 23-6 at the halftime break, the Knights' Clay DeWeese heated up from behind the arc, drilling four consecutive 3-pointers to put the game on ice.

The North Clay defense helped spark the offense and the Knights held Sarah Scott to just four points in the third period. DeWeese meanwhile posted 12 points in the quarter by himself and the Knights held a 41-10 lead heading into the fourth period.

The Scotties outscored the North Clay reserves in the final quarter to narrow the gap to the final margin.

In the early stages of the game, Jonathon Bradshaw got North Clay going with five points in the first quarter and Caleb Mason continued the run with all six of his points in the second quarter.

For the game, DeWeese posted a game-high 21 points with Bradshaw contributing nine and Mason's six.

In the 'B' game the Knights lost an 11 point lead in the first quarter before trailing five at halftime, but rallied for a 41-39 victory.

Mason hit a pair of free throws with 1:19 remaining in the game to give the Knights their final lead 41-39 and Kyle Hughes capped the win with a free throw with 25 seconds remaining.

The Scotties got off a couple of final shots in the waning seconds but couldn't get one to drop.

Hughes had nine points along with Scott Wheeler to lead the Knights with Mason chipping in eight and Jordan Allen adding five.

Next up for the eighth grade Knights (1-0 overall), a 6 p.m. game on Monday versus Chauncey Rose.
