Northview hoops opens year at Terre Haute South Jamboree

Monday, November 7, 2005

New emphasis has been put on a desire to compete on the basketball court for the Northview girls team this season. Coach Bob Medworth has implemented morning (6:30 a.m.) practices for the first time along with afternoon practices in an effort to add a little extra toughness to his squad.

The Knights got their first opportunity to show off what they've learned during Saturday's Terre Haute South Jamboree, but it was the host school that unveiled a much improved aggressive defense.

The Braves dominated their first quarter matchup with West Vigo, showing off a two-deep substitution plan that kept one five-person group in for approxmately a minute and a half before subbing in another entire five player group. The substitution plan allowed the Braves to overwhelm the Vikings on defense, and force 27 total turnovers in 16 minutes of action.

Overall, the combined effort of the Braves and Northview won a 79-33 decision over the Vikings and Terre Haute North.

South was the main proprietor of the points, including their 37-0 shutout of a stunned West Vigo squad that lost four of their top six players from last season's improved squad. Terre Haute North held an edge in free throw shooting that propelled them to a 15-8 advantage over the Knights in the second period and Northview outscored the Vikings 17-5.

Julie Whitted led the Knights with an eight point, six rebound and three blocked shot effort and the Knights also got five points, including a 3-pointer from Lexee Hayes and another shot from long range from Jennifer Gregg. Northview struggled from the free throw line, hitting just five-of-13 shots but did a solid job on the offense glass, pulling down a total of 20 rebounds.

The Braves got 16 points from sophomore Megan Craft, which led all scorers in the game and got five steals from freshman Randa Rector. Kara Kay added 11 points in less than 10 minutes of play.

The Knights will open play this season at Mooresville on Tuesday evening with the JV game slated to begin at 6 p.m.
