Eels fall in fourth quarter

Monday, November 21, 2005

For three quarters of play, the Clay City Eels held onto a solid lead over host Barr-Reeve in girls basketball action Friday night, but the fourth quarter was a different story.

The Vikings got eight points apiece from Katie Fox and Melissa Yoder to outscore the Eels 20-5 in the final period for a 50-43 victory. Yoder scored 20 points in the game, including four 3-pointers and Fox added another 15 for the Vikings in the team's season opener.

Clay City took the early lead behind a balanced scoring attack in the first period. Kristen Tyler had a pair of baskets and Whitney McWilliams added a 3-pointer and a two point basket to take an 11-7 lead. They held that margin at halftime 23-19 and added to it in the third quarter.

McWilliams hit all six of her free throws in the third period on the way to 15 points in the game as Clay City led 38-30 before the Vikings made their rally.

Next up for the 1-2 Eels is a game this evening at Rockville beginning at 6 p.m. with the JV game.

Clay City's JV team remained unbeaten this season with a 27-14 victory.
