-Knights hit nearly 70 percent in 1st half

The South Vermillion freshman girls basketball team hardly knew what had hit them in a game against Northview on Tuesday evening.

The Knights played strong man-to-man defense throughout the game and seemingly every first half shot dropped for Northview in the first half of a 44-12 win over the Wildcats.

On defense, Northview forced 13 first half turnovers and the Knights pounded the ball inside on the offensive end to the tune of 11-of-16 (68 percent) shooting from the field. While the Wildcats only made one fieldgoal in the first half, Northview got 10 points from Shelby Colson in the first two periods and another six from Kirsten Kimball to take a 26-3 lead at the break.

The Wildcats never recovered.

In the second half, South Vermillion got the first basket, but six-foot post player, Katie Smith answered with a basket and two free throws before Colson knocked down two of her own shots from the charity stripe to go up 34-5.

Like the rest of their game on Tuesday, the Knights' free throw shooting was exceptional.

Northview drilled nine-of-10 shots from the free throw line and despite cooling off to hit six-of-21 shots from the field in the second half, the Knights continued to pull away.

After a Kierstin Linton free throw for South Vermillion, Hannah Van Horn scored inside off a nice feed from Ali Rentschler to go up 36-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

South Vermillion had their best quarter of the game in the final period, hitting three hoops from the field, but the Knights got a 3-pointer from Kylee Thacker and baskets from Ashley Clarke and Allison Stearley to finish off the Wildcats.

Colson finished with a game-high 14 points and both Kimball and Smith added six points in the victory.

Northview improved to 2-1 on the season and will face West Vigo on November 30 at home beginning at 6 p.m.
