The Clay City Eels rebounded from their first loss of the season to pick up an important road win at Vincennes Rivet heading into the holiday break.
Senior Josey Vansickle scored 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter in which the Eels turned a five point halftime deficit into a five point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
In front of a packed homecoming crowd at Rivet, the Patriots looked to take control of the game early in the third period as Will Irvin scored off an inbounds layin and Adam Carroll drilled a 3-pointer to give the home team a 32-24 lead.
From there however, Clay City took over, holding Rivet to just three points over the remaining seven minutes of the quarter.
Vansickle sank a 3-point jumper to cap an 11-2 run that gave the Eels their first lead since the first quarter at 35-34. Vansickle would go on to hit another trey and Stephen Johnson got a rebound basket as Clay City took a 40-34 lead.
In the final quarter, Garrett Thatcher scored seven of his 19 points and Dustin Griffith capped the victory with a steal with 15 seconds left in the game.
Clay City's defense was important, becoming the first team this season to hold Rivet under 50 percent shooting from the field this season (15-of-36, 42 percent). The Eels were very efficient as well, turning the ball over just nine times in the game and hitting 50 percent (21-of-42) from the field for the game.
The Eels are off for the holidays and will compete in the Greene County Tourney beginning on Jan. 3 with their 6 p.m. game against Union (Dugger).
