Northview's Hannah Hunter defends a West Vigo ball handler in Thursday's win over the Vikings.
The Northview Lady Knights junior varsity overcame a slow start to beat West Vigo in the third round of the WIC tournament Thursday.
The Knights looked sluggish out of the gate, shooting a meager 3-of-12 from the field in the first quarter. But the Lady Vikings also struggled to score, and Northview's sputtering offense was able to maintain the lead for the duration of a rocky first half. The Knights found their offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points on the way to a 39-18 victory. Northview finished 2-1 on the tournament.
The slow start was reminiscent of last night's loss to Owen Valley. The Knights rallied in the fourth quarter and closed a double-digit lead to two points, only to miss the final shot of the game. Northview Coach Jennifer Daughtery said she was frustrated by another weak first-half performance.
"This tournament, we've waited until the second half to play ball," she said. "I thought everybody was still asleep. We've gotta come out ready to play ball."
Northview's stingy defense compensated for its lagging first-half offense, holding West Vigo to three points in each of the first two quarters.
But the Knights picked up the pace in the second half. Junior center Kayla Raderstorf shot 4-of-5 for eight points in the third, and Northview's defense held the Vikings scoreless until the 1:58 mark. The Knights pulled away in the fourth. Freshman Erica Lee's three-pointer at 3:30 gave Northview a 32-10 advantage. Lee was 4-of-5 for 12 points from beyond the arc in the fourth.
