Northview's Jared Timm scored nine points in the Knights win in their opener at the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic.

When entering tournament play, one of the biggest keys is playing well in the opening game.

Northview's Knights came into the sixth Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic on a two game losing streak, but had looked like they might be ready to turn the corner in their last game against Avon 10 days earlier. In their tourney opener against Greencastle on Tuesday, the Northview defense came to play and held the Tiger Cubs to a paltry 26 percent (13-of-50) shooting from the field in a 58-38 victory. The point total was nearly half of Greencastle's season average of 68.8 points per game.

The Knights success can be partially credited to a dominating performance on the boards.

Northview outrebounded the Tiger Cubs 43-26 in the game and were led by 6'8 senior center Nick Wells who pulled down a game-high 11 boards in the game and the Knights also got eight from Brodee Miller and another seven from guard Jared Timm.

The result was one of several early decisions by wide margins on the first day of the Pizza Hut Classic.

Owen Valley remained unbeaten with a very convincing win over West Vigo, 79-38 before Crawfordsville edged past Rockville by a 69-61 count. The Knights won their 20-point decision in the third game of the day and will advance to face Bloomfield, a 58-36 winner over Monrovia. Terre Haute South, hoping to defend their tournament title, opened their defense with a 51-41 victory over Bethesda Christian and Riverton Parke held off Marshall, Ill. 53-42.

Northview took control early in the game, holding Greencastle to two points in the opening period to take a 9-2 lead into the second quarter. Though the Tiger Cubs warmed up a bit, the Knights added to their lead before the halftime break, holding a 25-12 advantage a the halfway mark of the game.

Both teams handled the ball well, with the Tiger Cubs committing just 10 turnovers while the Knights had 13 in the game, but in the end it was Greencastle's shooting deficiencies that kept them from making any type of run.

The Knights outscored Greencastle in all four quarters on the way to their second win of the year and a berth in the winner's bracket of the tournament that they have won twice in six years.

Wells had a strong game for the Knights once more, following up a 24 point, eight rebound game against Avon with a 14 point, 11 rebound game. He was joined in double-figures by Josiah Brock who had 11 points and both Timm and Matt Stuckey added nine in the win.

The Knights will take on Bloomfield at 2:30 p.m. today in their second round game.
