Terre Haute South Vigo squeaked past Northview's wrestlers 37-35 at Terre Haute Wednesday, thanks in part to a crafty maneuver by South Head Coach Henry Villegas.

Villegas opted to forfeit the 125-pound division to Northview's Chris Craft, one of the area's top 125-pounders. South standout Brandon Smitley, a formidable 125-pounder in his own right, wrestled in the 130-pound division. Smitley eked out a two-point win against Northview's Brian Griffin, and Villegas' squad avoided back-to-back losses at 125 and 130, a scenario that would have put Northview within striking distance for the last match of the meet.

Northview sophomore Zach Stultz posted a pin at 4:48 in the third period of the final match, but by that time Villegas' Braves had put the match out of reach. Northview Coach Dan Mikesell tipped his hat to Villegas after the meet.

"They made a nice move, moving their 125," he said. "They trumped me."

Both teams won seven of the night's 14 individual matches, but Terre Haute notched four pins to Northview's three, accounting for the two-point South victory.

The Knights began the evening on a positive note, as Northview freshman Brandon Hathaway grabbed five team points with a 19-3 technical fall over South junior Adam Haber.

Northview forfeited at 145, as regular starter Chris Dean remained out of action with a broken arm. Terre Haute followed the forfeit victory with back-to-back wins-- South junior Chris Duncan pinned Knights sophomore Tommy Herr-Smith at 152, and Northview junior Hank Weishaupt succumbed to Braves senior Ben Miller in a 9-0 major decision, putting South ahead 16-5 for the meet.

The Knights got wins from Greg Stultz (171), Rob Pasalich (189), Josh Longo (112) and Zach Stultz (135), but couldn't quite make up the difference in the two-point Northview loss.

Northview will compete at Sullivan on January 14 in a 9 a.m. match.
