Clay City senior Josey Vansickle scored 20 points in the Eels loss to Shakamak in the Greene County Tourney.

The Clay City Eels have long won with defense on the basketball court and in four victories this year the squad has given up just over 51 points per game. But in their two losses, Clay City has allowed 71 and 68 points so in their second game of the Greene County Tournament, Shakamak got 27 points from Jared Rehmel and another 16 from Justin Cox in falling 67-58.

"We've given up 71 and 67 points in two games, and, if you ask most people, we've got an identity as a defensive team. And I'm not lumping everybody in this, but we have a group that's always thought that they can outscore most people," commented Clay City coach Grant McVay.

The Lakers got off to a good start against the Eels, outscoring the Eels 14-8 and holding a 30-24 advantage at the halftime break.

The Eels came through with a 24 point fourth quarter but the effort wasn't enough as Shakamak held off Clay City for the victory.

"Ultimately, we've got to learn to play 32 full minutes, and we didn't do that when we were 4-1. We haven't played a good, completely focused game since we came into the tournament," said McVay.

The loss drops the Eels to 4-3 overall this season as they host a big, physical South Putnam squad on Tuesday evening.

Clay City got a strong effort from their seniors in the loss with Josey Vansickle tallying 20 points, Cole Schroer chipped in with six and Dustin Griffith added six as well.

"Our seniors tonight gave us a fantastic effort. I thought we were going to have to carry Josey to get him off the court. The physical effort from them tonight was fantastic. We just have to have the rest of the team step up like that," commented McVay.

Junior forward Garrett Thatcher was the team's second leading scorer with 18 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Eels and Logan Bettenbrock contributed six points.
