Northview boys even WIC record with win

Monday, January 23, 2006

The Northview boy's basketball team improved to 2-2 in the Western Indiana Conference with a victory over South Vermillion Saturday.

The Knights and the Wildcats spent the first half locked in a dead heat, as South Vermillion, searching for its first win in conference play, looked determined to climb out of the WIC cellar. But Northview's 23-point third quarter performance, coupled with the clutch fourth quarter shooting of junior Brinn Meunier, sealed the deal for the Knights.

The close play of the first half revealed the Wildcats to be an interesting matchup for the Knights. Both teams went to the long ball early-- Northview went 3-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, the Wildcats 3-of-5. Senior South Vermillion forward Tyler Walker challenged 6'8'' Northview center Nick Wells in the post, holding the Knights big man to two field goals before the half.

The Wildcats trailed 13-11 after the first quarter, but opened the second with a 6-0 scoring run that prompted Northview Coach Mitch Lancaster to take a timeout with 6:19 remaining. The two teams traded blows for the remainder of the quarter, and a late three by Knights guard Matt Stuckey tied the score at 23 as the half ended.

But Northview began to surge ahead of South Vermillion in the third, on the strength of some timely three-point shooting and an eight-point effort by Wells. Stuckey and Meunier each connected from beyond the arc in the quarter, and Devon Chamberlain's three-pointer in the final seconds put the Knights ahead 46-37.

The Wildcats would draw within three in the fourth, but Meunier again stepped up for Northview, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the line and draining the back-to-back threes that effectively ended South Vermillion's chances.

The 58-47 victory moves Northview (6-8) ever closer to the .500 mark, while South Vermillion fell to 0-4 in the WIC and 5-11 overall. Meunier led the Knights with a season-high 18, followed by Wells and Matt Stuckey with 14 each. South Vermillion junior Cole Milam chipped in 17 to lead the Wildcats.
