Northview sweeps to wins over West Vigo

Monday, January 30, 2006

The Northview boys and girls basketball teams both captured meaningful wins in a Saturday double-header at West Vigo.

The Lady Knights (12-6) clinched a Western Indiana Conference championship with a 73-31 victory over the Vikings, while the Northview men scratched their way back to the .500 mark, improving their record to 8-8 with a 57-49 win.

The two games were a study in contrast. Northview's girls cruised to another easy win, taking a 9-7 lead with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter and turning it into a 42-point victory. Northview's men, on the other hand, limped to the finish line. The Knights nearly squandered a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, and Coach Mitch Lancaster questioned his team's desire in the final minutes.

"It's nice that we won the ballgame, but we'll look at this and learn from it like a loss," he said. "We were not the aggressor (late in the game). We played scared."

Northview finished the first half with a 35-22 advantage over the Vikings, and it appeared the Knights were gathering steam on their way to another leisurely win. But West Vigo tightened the screws in the third quarter, forcing eight turnovers and holding Northview to three field goals while whittling the lead to 10.

A mid-range jumper by Vikings forward Bryan Chestnut with 4:38 to play in the fourth brought West Vigo within six of the lead. The Knights were slow to respond to the Vikings' surge, converting on one of only five attempted field goals in the quarter.

But the Knights were a different team from the foul line. Northview sealed the win with a 10-of-15 effort from the line in the fourth, including a clutch six-for-six performance by sophomore guard Jared Timm.

Nick Wells led the Northview men in scoring with 17, followed by Matt Stuckey with 14 and Timm's 13. Julia Whitted dropped in 16 for the Lady Knights. Jennifer Gregg added 13 and Spring Raines finished with 11.
