Clay City senior Whitney McWilliams goes up for a shot.

The Clay City Lady Eels couldn't quite sneak past the Bloomfield Cardinals Saturday, losing 62-48 in the sectional championship game.

Clay City kept pace with the third-ranked Class A team in the state until late in the third quarter, a stark contrast to the Eels' 80-27 blowout loss to the Cardinals Jan. 12. Clay City Coach Keith Jones said the Eels' post-season surge, culminating in a second-round sectional win over a favored Union squad Friday, would have been difficult to predict earlier in the season.

"We had a heck of a run," he said. "I don't think anyone thought we could do what we did."

Whitney McWilliams, Clay City's senior point guard and the school's all-time leading scorer, turned in another show-stopping performance against Bloomfield, dropping in 23 points on the night.

Many of those points came at crucial moments. McWilliams responded to a three-pointer by Bloomfield's Lacy Bowersock with just under two minutes to play in the first with a three-point play that narrowed the Cardinals lead to 11-9. Her improbably long three-pointer with 1:28 left in the second quarter again brought the Eels to within two, at 22-20.

But the Cardinals continued to apply pressure to a smaller Clay City lineup. Bloomfield ended the third quarter with a 10-point advantage, and clutch free-throw shooting from junior guard Abbey Gilliland late in the game sealed the Cardinals victory.

Junior forward Sarah Kennedy complemented McWilliams' 23 with 10 points, followed by sophomore Angie Camp with seven.

The Eels finish the season with a 10-13 mark.
