- Five champions for North Clay at Western Indiana meet
North Clay had five individual champions and four runnerups at the Western Indiana Conference meet on Saturday at South Vermillion.
The strong showing led the Knights to a third place finish as a team in a tight race that saw Owen Valley nudge out the host Wildcats with 406 points to 402 with the Knights close behind at 395.
North Clay excelled in the lower weights as Caleb Nicosin received a first round by and then drilled his next two opponents 6-1 and 6-2 to become the 70 pound champion. At 80 pounds, Skyler Hall opened the tourney with an 8-4 decision over an opponent from Owen Valley and followed that by taking a 13-2 win against Brown County. In the title match, Hall shutout his Edgewood competitor by a 4-0 score and another championship for the Knights.
Luke Pingleton was also a champion for North Clay, getting a forfeit in his opener and then adding a pin against Owen Valley in 2:40 and taking out a South Vermillion grappler 11-2 for the title at 90 pounds.
In the 130 pound class, Broc Potter became North Clay's fourth champion when he squeezed out a 4-2 finals decision against South Vermillion. Potter got to the finals by winning 11-7 in his opener and then dominated in a 15-0 second round victory that propelled him to the title bout.
North Clay's final champion was 180-pounder Brad Powell who opened with a bye and then won a 4-3 bout against Brown County and then took a 6-3 win against South Vermillion in the championship.
Also for North Clay, Austin Bell placed second at 75 pounds by winning his second round match 7-0 versus Sullivan before a title bout loss. At 85 pounds, Austin Sciotto got a first round forfeit before squeaking past his second round Owen Valley grappler, 6-5 to make the finals before a loss.
Also as runnerups, Cody Brattain won a 5-3 second round matchup with Edgewood after a first round forfeit before a title match loss. At 275, Beau Judd got a pair of forfeits before a championship loss for North Clay.
In the third for North Clay was Carson Craft at 100 pounds who lost a narrow 3-1 opener against Edgewood, but rebounded with authority by taking a 16-0 victory over Sullivan and came through with a 6-2 win against Edgewood. Brandon Mikesell lost his opening matchup but came back strong with a 35 second pin and a 12-2 victory against Edgewood. Brady Silvers lost an overtime decision at 155 pounds but came back for a 53 second pin after a bye to take third place and Tommy Holifield dropped a tight 7-5 decision in the second round and came back after a bye for a pin against Edgewood for third place.
Up next for North Clay will be a trip to Cloverdale on Tuesday evening beginning at 6 p.m.
