Bellmont able to hold off Knights in championship game

Monday, April 24, 2006

Staff Reports

The Comeback Knights finally met their match for a day, failing to make a rally against Bellmont in the championship game of the Northview Invitational on Saturday.

Northview has made a habit of rallying for wins during a 9-0 start this year, but on Saturday, Class 3A No. 5 Bellmont got a complete game four hitter from Kraig Miller to hand Northview their first loss of the year, 3-0.

Curt Peters placed Northview in the championship by throwing a shutout of his own as the Knights rolled to a 9-0 win over Bloomington South in the first game. The Knights had six extra base hits in the victory, including a two-run homerun from Chase Yocom to drop Bloomington South to 4-6 on the season. Meanwhile, Bellmont was rallying to defeat Avon by a 9-8 margin in nine innings.

In the title game, Northview starting hurler did about everything he could possibly do to keep Bellmont at bay.

In the third inning, Brackney got into a bases loaded no-out situation and nearly worked his way out of the jam, but catcher Jon Kiefer smacked a two-out, two-run single to get the Braves on the board.

Brackney would cruise much of the rest of the way, putting together a complete game on just 55 pitches.

But Miller was keeping the Knights' offense in check as well.

Ryne Barr reached first with an infield single in the sixth inning and moved to third on an error, but was stranded there when Miller coaxed an infield out before a strikeout and flyout ended the threat.

Miller would strikeout eight Northview batters in the game to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Offensively, John Reberger had four hits on the day with a double a run scored an RBI while Austin Bryan doubled twice in the opening game to drive home two runs. Jesse Johnson also had two hits with a double, two runs and an RBI. Catcher Keaton Robertson doubled as part of his two hits and drove home a pair and Brackney also had two hits with a double.

Next up for Northview (11-1 overall) will host Sullivan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
