Clay City softball, boys track win

Clay City stayed on a roll against solid teams this week by defeating visiting South Putnam on Tuesday night by a 5-1 count.

The Eels got two hits, an RBI and a run scored from Kendra Roe and Kylee Knox had a double with two runs driven in for the Eels who evened their record at 6-6 this year and South Putnam drops to 10-3.

Kayla Baumgartner had two hits while Angie Camp drove home a run with a hit, Tasha Collenbaugh had a hit and scored a run and both Kayla Withrow and Chelsea Hane had hits as well.

Lindsey Moss got the victory on the mound, going 6 2/3 innings before Collenbaugh came on to get the final out of the game.

The Eels will get perhaps their biggest challenge of the season thus far when they face off with Class A No.1 ranked North Daviess at home on Thursday night.

The JV squad was a 9-1 winner on the strength of a 4-for-4 night from Brooklyn Higar who had two doubles, a triple and drove in four runs. Meranda Jackson had three hits and two RBIs and Tawnee Hayden doubled and drove a run home. Mardi Steiner, Chelsea Bryan and Lindsey Hayden all had hits.

The JV team improves to 6-1 overall.

Clay City Track

Clay City's boys track team earned a narrow 66 to 57 win over Cloverdale on Tuesday night.

Cole Schroer was a winner in the 100 meters (12.5) with Jason Shouse in third. Schroer was also third in the 300 and 110 hurdle events and Logan Bettenbrock won the 1,600 (4:53) and 800 meters (2:16). He was also a member of the winning 3,200 meter relay team along with Adam Schroer, Braxton Griffith and Kevin Cook. The 400 relay team of Jeremy Reece, Shouse, Lucas and Garry Payne were winners as well. Shouse was second in the 200 followed by Jeremy Reece.

Adam Schroer was the 3,200 winner followed by Braxton Griffith. In the 400 meters, Kevin Cooks was the winner in 56.9 with Stephen Johnson in third.

In throwing events, Andrew Marrs, DJ Liechty and Matt Marrs swept the discus and Andrew Marrs and Matt Marrs were 2-3 in the shot. In other field events, Garrett Thatcher was third in the high jump.
