Northview freshman Shandi Travis leapt her way to a Big Four Championship in the high jump on Saturday afternoon. She set her personal best by clearing 5-2.

TERRE HAUTE -- Shandi Travis learned a lesson Saturday that could carry her to great things before her Northview High School track and field career is finished.

Travis, only a freshman, cleared a career-high 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump in the Big 4 Track and Field Meet at Terre Haute South High School.

"It felt like a really good day, so I decided that I would do good. And being a freshman out here it was kind of intimidating, but I just pulled through and got first [place]," Travis said.

Travis' first place was Northview's only victory in either the girls or boys meet. Terre Haute North won both the team championships.

Neil Vanatti led Northview to 82.5 points and a third place finish in the boys meet, while Travis accounted for nearly half of the Knights fourth place total of 16 points.

Travis, who's previous best was 5-feet-1, said she pulled it all together on the winning jump. "I felt like my form was really good and that helped me to get my goal," she said.

Travis also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.04 seconds and sixth (not a scoring position) in the 300-hurdles.

Northview's Vanatti was the victim of two strong performances by Terre Haute South's Anthony Lewis. Vanatti, who has put the shot 51 feet, 11 inches this season, put it 49-feet-11 on Saturday and Lewis won with a throw of 50-feet, 1/2 inch.

But even Vanatti's season-best discus throw, 149-feet-10, couldn't have matched Lewis' meet record 166-feet-1. Vanatti threw the discus 145 feet for second place.

Shaun Hardy and Devon Chamberlain scored well for the Knights. Hardy finished fourth in the 100 and 200 dashes and teamed with Chamberlain, Dustin Pruett and Broc Miller for a third place in the 4x100 relay.

Chamberlain also finished third in the 400 and fourth in the 100.

James Grounds and Jared Timm each brought home a pair of third places for the Knights.

Grounds finished third in the 1600-meter run at 4:45.10 and came back to score another third in the 3200 with a season-best time of 10:23.06.

In addition to running on Northview's third place 4x400 relay team,

Timm also sprinted to a third place in the 400 meters. He turned the one-lap race in 53.22 seconds.

Northview hurdler Griffin Mauer earned two fourth places. He ran the 300-meter low hurdles in 45 seconds and the 110-high hurdles in 18.33 seconds.

Northview will now focus to the Western Indiana Conference Track and Field Meets this week. The WIC girls meet is Wednesday at Edgewood and the boys meet in Friday night at Northview High School.
