(Top) Neil Vanatti won both the shotput and discus on Friday while the 4X100 relay team including (Devon Chamberlain and Broc Miler (center) was second. (Below) Cole Doyle finished in a tie for second in the pole vault.

On a night fit for neither man nor beast, Neil Vanatti stood out for Northview High School.

With the cold rain and wind blowing in his face, Vanatti won two events and delivered a personal best that helped keep Northview in the chase for the Western Indiana Conference boys track and field title right up to the final events.

Northview was in third place going into the final event of the night, the 1600-meter relay. Edgewood recovered from a slow start and passed Northview's anchor man in the final 200 meters to win the race and the conference title for the fourth straight year.

Edgewood pulled out a 140.83-134.5 victory over Brown County, followed Northview with 126.33 points. Owen Valley finished fourth with 134.5, followed by with West Vigo 61, South Vermillion 45 and Sullivan 33.33.

This meet was so very close all night, which slowed the scoring of the meet, as video tapes were studied before points were assigned. With three events to be scored, Edgewood led 132.83, followed by Brown County with 119. 50 and Northview with 114.33. Competition on the track was completed 30 minutes before the final scores were announced.

Northview coach Jeff Gambill couldn't be too disappointed with the Knights, as most performed better than their seeding.

"Those things happen," Gambill said of the 1600-meter relay.

"All the teams had problems like that [tonight]. Brown County had their top seed in the pole vault no-height. We had a kid no-height in the pole vault, too. Brown County had a kid [disqualified] in the 100 and 200 [-meter dashes] because he didn't show up [at the events]. Edgewood had two horrible starts in their relays and they overcame that. We all had our set of problems tonight," Gambill said.

Vanatti threw the discus 150-feet, 9 inches and put the shot 49 feet, 51/2 inches.

"I know he had his personal best in the discus. He didn't in the shot [put]. Conditions were just not very favorable for field events. I think once we start getting some nice warmer weather [personal records] will just keep coming," coach Gambill said.

Brown County's Curtis Carr was the most dominant athlete on the track.

He won the 800-meter run, the 1600, 3200 and anchored winning 3200-meter relay team.
