Northview athletes making waves nationally

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

The Wabash Valley Wrestling Club is enjoying perhaps its most successful season to date with a pair of athletes receiving state-wide and national attention for their efforts on the mat this year.

Chris Craft, a freshman at Northview High School has been selected by the Indiana State Wrestling Association as a member of the cultural exchange team traveling to Turkey this summer. This event is one of the most prestigious wrestling events for high school aged wrestlers.

As a member of the exchange team, Craft will visit the cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Bursa on the 14-day trip during the last week of June and first week of July. While on the trip, he will be exposed not only to some of the best wrestlers in his age group that Turkey has to offer, but will experience the unique history and rich area of this part of the world.

Northview junior Chris Dean has also qualified for a national tournament, the Asics Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND July 22-29.

Dean is the first person from Brazil to qualify for the Junior Nationals and did so by placing second at the Central Junior Regionals April 8 and 9th.

The trip includes a one week camp prior to leaving for Fargo and it is a great honor to represent the Wabash Valley as part of Team Indiana.

Craft also qualified for the Asics Nationals in Fargo by placing third at the ISWA Greco Roman State Finals.

As you might imagine, these trips are quite expensive with the trip to Turkey costing an estimated $2,500 and the Fargo trip in the neighborhood of $1,000. Since the Wabash Valley Wrestling Club is a not for profit group, anyone interested in making a donation to help offset the costs for these wrestlers to achieve a very special experience can do so by mailing a check to: Wabash Valley Wrestling Club, 5686 North Rainbow Drive, West Brazil, IN 47834.

Since the club is a not-for-profit group, all donations are tax-deductible.

A pair of other wrestlers for the club have also been selected as alternates for the trip as Beau Pingleton, a sophomore at Northview, placed fourth at the ISWA Kids/Cadet freestyle state finals earlier this month. The top three are invited to the National Team. If any of those three do not choose to attend or qualify through another tournament, a spot will open for Pingleton. The Nationals will be held July 22-29 in Fargo, ND and is held in conjunction with the Junior Nationals.

Brandon Mikesell, a seventh grader at North Clay, placed third at the ISWA Greco Roman State Finals which makes him the first alternate for the Schoolboy Nationals Duals team. The Schoolboy Duals are held in Indianapolis June 7-11.

The Wabash Valley Wrestling Club, Northview High School and North Clay Middle School as well as the state of Indiana would like to thank everyone in advance for their efforts to help these athletes be a part of a unique and prestigious trip.
