TERRE HAUTE -- Terre Haute North capped off their sweep of the team points battles in sectional track action on Thursday night easily outdistancing rival Terre Haute South by a 184 to 146 margin.

Clay County throwers continued to show off their skills, this time in the boys meet as Northview's Neil Vanatti won the sectional championship in the shotput with a throw of 51-11 and was second in the discus with a heave of 153-10 to place behind South's Anthony Lewis.

"Neil winning a championship was a high point," commented coach Jeff Gambill of his senior. "We did well in some places we didn't expect to and didn't do as well as we expected in others."

"Neil had a great meet, it's no easy task to beat (Anthony) Lewis."

Clay City's Andrew Marrs will also be advancing to regional competition with a third place in the discus and fourth in the shotput for the Eels.

"We knew it was going to be tough," said Clay City coach Keith Jones. "Coming up here and running against the giants, but that's no excuse. Andrew getting out was nice, we're going to miss the twins (Andrew and Matt Marrs) and they've only been throwing for two years."

Northview had a big day in the relays with all three teams making their way out to regional competition.

"That might be the first time I can remember since I've been here that we've qualified all three teams," said Gambill of the big day.

Northview's 3,200 relay team of Drew White, Hank Weishaupt, Hunter Reberger and Landry Moore was the runnerup finisher in 8:36.90, finishing just three seconds behind Terre Haute North. The 1,600 relay squad consisting of Jared Timm, Brodee Miller, Moore and Weishaupt capped the evening by qualifying for the regional as well. In the 400 relay event, Shaun Hardey, Brian Walden, Broc Miller and Devon Chamberlain raced to a third place finish behind the Patriots and Braves.

James Grounds led the distance contingent for the Knights with a pair of fourth place qualifying efforts in the 1,600 and 3,200 events. Terre Haute South's Andrew Sullivan won both races for the Braves.

The Knights' Robert Van Buren came through with perhaps the evening's biggest upset, qualifying for the regional long jump with a fourth place finishing leap of 18-3 1/2.

"Robert did really well for us tonight," said Gambill of his senior. "We had some near misses too, Brodee Miller had his PR in the high jump (5-10), but finished fifth and Shaun Hardey was fifth in the 100 meters and Nick Gebert was fifth in the discus, but we did well for the cold conditions."

"This is a hard working group," said Jones of his track squad. "I think the quality of this meet is up this year. I'm proud of them."

The regional track meet will take place on Thursday in Evansville.
