Clay City sophomore Rachel Narlock cleared 5-2 at the Evansville track regional on Wednesday night to qualify for the IHSAA State Track and Field Finals on June 2.

One year ago, Clay City's Rachel Narlock came up one spot short of qualifying for the state track and field meet. She was left in fourth place, on the outside looking in by merely two inches. So on Wednesday night when she was tied for third with Terre Haute North's Beth Leiber after each cleared 5-2 in the high jump, the figuring began for officials.

The picture evidently wasn't finally clear until Thursday afternoon, as officials went back and figured the tiebreaker, most misses over the entire event. Eventually it was determined that both Leiber and Narlock finished in a tie for third place and will each qualify for the state finals in the event.

Narlock is the only qualifier from Clay County to advance to the meet at the track and field complex at Indiana University on Friday, June 2.

Several other athletes had strong performances, but came up just a bit short in their own state qualifying effort.

Clay City's Kasey Waite and Northview's Ashley Davis narrowly missed the next level, placing fourth and fifth in the discus.

Waite's throw of 106-4 was short of the third place throw of 107-11, but still five feet farther than her seeded throw while Davis' toss of 105-2 was more than two feet farther than her seed.

In the shotput, Jackie Sands placed 12th for the Eels with a throw of 31-7.

In the 400 meters, Northview junior Hannah Hunter ran to a 12th place finish in 1:03.57.

Both the Eels and Knights had teams in relay action, Clay City was 11th in the 400 relay with Andrea Ladd, Hanna Moore, Narlock and Shawna Vencel running a time of 52.72. The Knights were 13th in 53.18 as Renee Leslie, Emily Chiles, Elle Kleiber and Kaley Huffman finished just behind the Eels.

In the 3,200 relay, Northview's Brittney Spugnardi, Kylee Thacker, Allie True and Cassandra Barnett were 12th in 11:03.62 with the Eels' team of Megan Vansickle, Chelsea Taylor, Alisha Drake and Moore running to a 14th place finish in 11:15.41.

In other field events, Shandi Travis cleared 4-10 to finish 10th in the high jump and in the pole vault, Andrea Thomas was ninth for the Knights, clearing 8-0.

Other notable efforts from the area including a regional record run by Sullivan's Erica Moore in the 300 hurdles, besting the 1994 record set by Lori Kemp of Castle. Moore lowered the record by nearly a full second with her time of 43.89, beating Kemp's time of 44.73.

Terre Haute North's Kylie Hutson broke her own record in the pole vault by clearing 11-0 to beat her 2004 mark of 10-5 1/2.

Terre Haute South won the team track regional by scoring 92 points to beat out Terre Haute North's 69.5 points.

The state finals are scheduled to begin on Friday, June 2 at 3 p.m. with the field event trials and finals.
