Eels open postseason with Bulldog shutout

The Clay City Eels and Tim Shaw (pictured) advanced to the semifinals of the Shakamak Sectional on Monday afternoon with a victory. The Eels will play on Thursday evening.

The Clay City Eels kicked off the postseason by shutting down the Union Bulldogs on Memorial Day by an 8-0 score.

Andre Hayes had everything working on the mound for the Eels, striking out 12 batters in a complete game shutout.

He also contributed a pair of hits and an RBI and Austin Vansickle drilled a two-run homerun to go with a double and three RBIs in the game. Will Kennedy added three hits for Clay City who improved to two doubles and two runs driven in.

The Eels did much of their damage over the first few innings, scoring a single run in the first inning then warming up to score two in the second and four in the third to cruise to the victory.

Next up for the Eels (8-10) will be a semifinal game on Thursday evening at Shakamak beginning at 6 p.m.

Northview Baseball

On Saturday afternoon, the Northview Knights added another pair of wins to close out their regular season against Beech Grove.

Northview got rolling slowly on the weekend, leaving 10 men on base, but still earning a 5-1 decision.

Curtis Peters went 6 2/3 innings for the Knights to improve to 8-1 this season. John Reberger got the save in the game, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Jesse Johnson drove home two runs and had a pair of hits and Austin Bryan added two more hits, doubled and drove home a run. Keaton Robertson had an RBI and Chase Yocom stole three bases for the Knights, Sean Brackney had an RBI as well for the Knights. Graig Bass and J.J. Smerdel each had a hit as well in the game.

In game two, Northview didn't have nearly as many troubles scoring their runners, romping out to a 15-5 victory, scoring nine runs in the sixth inning for the final margin.

Reberger was big at the plate for Northview driving home five runs with a 3-run homerun and four hits. Bryan added three hits and three RBIs and Cody Crooks doubled and drove home a run with two hits. Matt Deakins had three hits with a double and an RBI and Yocom drove home a run as well. Robertson had a pair of hits with Brackney and Bass chipping in with hits.

Smerdel got the win on the mound and Reberger added another save for the Knights.

Northview improves to 24-3 on the season and will play Mooresville in the Terre Haute South Sectional on Thursday at following a 5 p.m. semifinal game between Terre Haute North and the host Braves.
