Clay County athletes performed at a high level in boys regional track competition last week, but came up just short in their bids to advance to the IHSAA State Track and Field Finals in Bloomington this week.

Northview's contingent was paced by a personal best performance by senior Neil Vanatti, ripping off a throw of 52-2 1/2 in the shotput that breaks his old school record for the third time this season. However, his toss was good for fifth place against a particularly deep regional field. Vanatti fell two places short of qualifying for the state meet as Kwan Dixon of Evansville Bosse was third with a throw of 54-0.

Vanatti came even closer in the discus, placing fourth with a throw of 153-0, finishing 10 inches behind the qualifying throw of Terre Haute South's Anthony Lewis who was third.

Clay City's Andrew Marrs threw 43-8 1/2 to place 13th in the shotput and had a throw of 129-9 to finish 13th in the discus for the Eels.

In the relay events, Northview's 4X400 relay team ran to an eighth place finish paced by the squad of Shawn Hardey, Brian Walden, Broc Miller and Devon Chamberlain. The 1,600 relay team raced to a 12th place finish with a team of Jared Timm, Hank Weishaupt, Brodee Miller and Landry Moore. In the 3,200 relay, Northview's team of Drew White, Weishaupt, Moore and Hunter Reberger were seventh in 8:37.22.

Senior James Grounds competed in the 3,200 meter run and took sixth place in 10:04.67 and Robert Van Buren was 15th in the longjump at 17-7 for the Knights.

Terre Haute North took home the team title with 68 points to beat out Evansville Central's 60.5 in second points.

Top Wabash Valley performances came from North's Emmanuel Aouad who took second place in both the 110 and 300 hurdles along with third in the long jump. The Braves got a third place finish from Andrew Sullivan in the 3,200 who was also fourth in the 1,600.

The IHSAA State Track and Field Finals begin on Friday at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington at Indiana University and start with field event trials at 3 p.m. Admission in $7.
