The 2006 girls golf season got underway in the Wabash Valley this week with the Northview Knights kicking off the year with three tournaments.

The Knights traveled to the Brebeuf Invitational on Monday afternoon for a tourney at Bent Tree Golf Course where they placed fourth with an 18-hole team score of 349.

The six-team tournament featured Noblesville, who placed second as a team at the state finals last season and return two members who played both days of the finals.

The Millers won the tourney on Monday by shooting a 313 followed by Indianapolis Brebeuf with a 321 and Carmel who shot a 327. Northview got an 81 from junior Mary Beth Tribble and an 83 from senior Millie Akers. Senior Madison Kirchner scored a 93 with Kayla Cooper recording a 92. Freshman Olivia Oehler shot a 123 and Sunny Shaw finished with a 136.

Milena Savich from Carmel was the medalist with a 67.

The following day, Northview made the long trip to the Valparaiso Invitational which featured 19 of the state's top teams.

The Knights came out of the tourney in seventh place after shooting a 362 at Aberdeen.

The tournament was won by Brebeuf who outshot the host squad by five strokes with a 315.

For Northview, Tribble led the way with an 85 followed by Akers with an 87, Kirchner shot a 92 followed by Cooper at 98 and Savannah Purcell with a 119.

Aimee Neff was the medalist with a round of 70.

For the Knights, the season begins with high hopes after a trip to the state finals last season. Returning from the starting five last year are seniors Madison Kirchner and Millie Akers along with junior Mary Beth Tribble. With several spots remaining on the varsity squad, the Knights look to several young players to step into the rotation.

There are five freshmen new to the team this season and while their isn't much experience to draw from, coach Teresa Akers is excited about the young players on the team.

"We've got a lot of young players on the team this year and that's really exciting. Everything has been really positive so far. We've been rotating some of our younger players into the first two tournaments and getting them some experience. We're hoping to have a very strong season."

The Knights also have a pair of sophomores competing for starting spots in Purcell and Shaw and injured senior Abby Smith hopes to return later this season.

This afternoon Northview will compete in the Mustang Invitational at Stonecrest Golf Course.
